Dr. Michael S. Trayford – Biography

Dr Michael Trayford photoDr. Michael S. Trayford was born and raised on the north shore of Long Island, NY.  He pursued his undergraduate studies in biology and physics through the State University of New York.  Remaining upstate NY, he enrolled in a rigorous course of study at New York Chiropractic College, leading to his degree of Doctor of Chiropractic.  Upon graduation he already knew there was much more involved with his training, skills, and profession than treating neck and back pain; a perception the vast majority of the public has maintained about chiropractors for several decades due to the influence of the major insurance carriers’ integration of chiropractic services into their systems.

Knowing this, Dr. Trayford entered into a postdoctoral program of study in the field of Functional Neurology through the Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies.  For the next 4 years he delved into the workings of the human brain and was, and still is, humbled by the complexity of the human nervous system and its interaction with the environment (both internal and external).  This amazing adventure led to his earning a Diplomate status in 2002 from the American Chiropractic Neurology Board (ACNB), a fully accredited credentialing agency.  This distinct designation of Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist is one of only 3 chiropractic sub-specialties recognized by the state of North Carolina and the NC Board of Examiners.  Further, there are currently less than 10 such active practitioners in North Carolina, and only one currently active with the ACNB in western North Carolina – Dr. Trayford.

Although able to assess and treat most disorders of the human nervous system, Dr. Trayford places a special emphasis on disorders of balance and movement in his clinical practice.  This includes, but is not limited to: traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s, dystonia, vertigo, multiple sclerosis (MS), ALS, seizure disorders, and neuropathy.  He also maintains a large population of ‘healthy’ clients looking to elevate their level of athletic, artistic and academic performance through implementing pro-active ‘brain training’ practices into their daily routines.  He continues active pursuit of knowledge in the areas of functional neurology, neuroplasticity, and functional medicine to the present day.

Dr. Trayford’s many years of experience in integrated health care practices in New York have given him the advantage of seeing a wide spectrum of disorders of humankind.  It has also given him the ability to communicate and work with a wide variety of health care practitioners (both conventional and complementary), making him better able to understand and appreciate the many different and complex approaches toward case management.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Trayford enjoys spending as much time as possible with his family in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina; as well as reading, hiking, running, mountain biking, cooking, and, of course, a lifelong passion for learning!  He has dedicated his life to service outside of the office with extensive community involvement through Rotary, as well as numerous board appointments and advisory roles for local and regional non-profit and leadership development organizations.
